- Ford was the first freshman ever to start for a Smith-coached team
- ACC Player of the Year (1978)
- 3x First-team All-ACC (1976–1978)
- ACC Tournament MVP (1975)
- No. 12 retired by the North Carolina Tar Heels
- In 1978, Ford finished his career at Carolina as the leading all-time leading scorer in school history with 2,290 points until he was passed by Tyler Hansborough
- Inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in May 1991
